I joined NYFA a time when the website was being penalized by the Penguin 2.0 update so my first task was to analyze the backlink profile and social media efforts to identify and remedy violations. I was able to find backlinking patterns that were in violation of the new Penguin guidelines and immediately changed the way we built links while slowly removing links that did not meet the guidelines. (e.g. footer, no links pages, low quality directories etc.) At a volatile time when even FullSail, one of NYFA’s top competitors was getting hammered, we were able to stop the bleeding and gain our rankings back by replacing the bad links with high quality links and citations we earned through 100% Google friendly SEO practices.

As part of the recovery process, I setup a PR and media contact campaign that included publications on CBS.com, NBC.com, Morningstar.com, TMZ.com, NYCPPnews.com, IFTN.ie, and many more.

Moving on, I then overhauled our outreach process; Instead of picking the low hanging fruit that hurt the site before, I reached out to top industry blogs and organizations to work on sponsorships and content collaboration projects that resulted in high quality, natural link building. This required content creation and management but also relationship building with top names like PCgamer, Behance, Film School (indie rock band), Rolling Stone Magazine, Photographyblog.com, Zap2it.com, Manhattan Film Festival and many more.

My next order of business was the on-page attributes, bringing the 15 year old website up-to-date using modern standards. This required a complete overhaul of the website and all 9,000+ of it’s pages. With the use of CMS, I implemented a hierarchical site structure to improve indexing and crawlability by over 45%. In addition, I created a multi-user platform from WPMU that allowed students, alumni and administration the ability to create sites and blogs to upload and showcase their work with the objective to create of tens of thousands of pages with optimized Panda-friendly content to expand our reach, keywords, social signals and overall exposure for the school and our 6000+ students.
