First thing’s first, before you get too carried away with promoting your first WordPress plugin, you gotta get your plugin submitted to WordPress. This is exactly the stage that I am in right now with my awesome new plugin WP-Leads. I created an account at WordPress.org and navigated my way to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/add/ where I filled out the form and submitted my plugin URL. That was 5 days ago and I’m not sure what to do next.

Here’s my post in the support forum…

And if you’re logged in, here’s the link to the plugin page…

WordPress Plugin Promotion

Moving on, there’s many things you can be doing to promote your WordPress plugin while you are waiting for approval from WordPress.org.

1. Reach out to the WordPress community to let them know about your new plugin on their forum, blog and other similar webmaster communities.

2. Start an affiliate program so others can make money promoting your plugin.

3. A guerrilla tactic for promoting a wordpress plugin is via blog spam. This barely legal method can also get you on some blacklists and make you quite unpopular in the WordPressosphere but so can using words like WordPressosphere. It’s a little dirty but just think about who the recipients of your spampaign will be… WordPress webmasters; Just the target audience that you are after!

4. Pay per click campaigns are in the plugin niche are still very uncompetitive so you might want to look there for cheap targeted clicks.

5. Promote your plugin page by building links and exposure to it. My WordPress plugin page is http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-leads/ but the plugin must be approved before WordPress.org will make the page public. Otherwise, one must be logged in to see the page.
